Storm shelters in Sapulpa, OK
Sapulpa, the Creek County seat, runs its shelter registry through the Fire Department and asks for more detail than most nearby cities.
Registration
- The online Safe Room/Storm Shelter Registration asks how many adults and pets use the shelter, what supplies are kept there, any medical needs and the year it was built (Sapulpa Fire Department Safe Room/Storm Shelter Registration).
Permit
- Building permits go through Building Inspections at the City Hall Annex, 424 E. Hobson; residential permits usually take 3 to 5 business days and the city builds to the 2015 IRC (City of Sapulpa FAQs).
Local risk and homes
- Creek County recorded 76 tornadoes from 1950 to 2025 (NWS Norman, Oklahoma tornadoes by county, 1950-2025).
- Sapulpa has about 9,817 housing units; the median home was built in 1977, and about 55% were built before 1980 (U.S. Census ACS 2020-2024 for Sapulpa, via Census Reporter).
Tip: Fill in the medical-needs field honestly; it tells crews who may need help first.

An EF2 on May 13, 2010 ran about 23 miles from 1 mile west of Sapulpa toward Lynn Lane, and an EF1 on April 26, 2016 went from near Kellyville to west-northwest of the city (NWS Norman Creek County tornado list).
Sapulpa's FAQ says owners may do their own building work if it meets code, but electrical, plumbing and mechanical work must be done by contractors licensed by the state and registered with the city (City of Sapulpa FAQs). If your shelter needs a new circuit for lights or a vent fan, that means a licensed electrician.
